North Star Books, was founded by Robert Everett Kerr, Jr., in the late 1990s in Baltimore, Maryland. Robert Kerr, my father, was also known by me, my siblings, and our children as Pop. North Star Books was a brick and mortar bookstore, specializing in Afrocentric works. Pop used to admonish us with something he heard as a young adult. He learned that, "If you want to keep a secret from Black folks, put it in a book." So Pop became an avid reader and he passed that interest on to me, his oldest child -- Cathy Michele Kerr, also known as Cathy Ames Turner, Ph.D.
Pop was determined that his children and grands would find the secrets and navigate the world based on the knowledge of those secrets. Pop passed away in 2006. But his vision of finding and exposing knowledge lives on through the legacy that he birthed through North Star Books. With the agreement of my siblings, Pop's vision will continue and it will grow.
